About us

Meet Lily Gyozalyan — founder & lead tutor.

Personal, honest teaching obsessed with where English takes you — not mechanics alone.

Lily Gyozalyan, founder of EnglishMax

Fourteen years ago I started teaching English with one belief: that a language lesson should do more than teach a language.

In my classroom, students have always learned English through ideas — history, art, philosophy, culture. You learn the word “perspective” by studying how Renaissance painters invented depth on a flat canvas. You build an argument in English by debating real events that actually changed the world. You find your voice in a new language by encountering the voices of people who fought to have one.

Language without ideas is just mechanics. I was never interested in mechanics alone.

I built EnglishMax for people who are going somewhere — and who need English to get there. Over fourteen years, those people have been schoolchildren walking into a classroom where nothing made sense yet. Students racing toward a test score that would determine their next three years. Immigrants who arrived with a full life behind them — a profession, an education, a reputation — and had to rebuild their credibility from scratch in a language that was not theirs. Professionals who were the most capable person in the room and the least heard. Parents who wanted their children to have something they had to fight for themselves.

Every single one of them came with a direction. English was the next step. That is what this school is built around. Not the language itself — but where it takes the people who learn it.

I am glad you are here.

Our principles

How we teach.

Think in English

Every lesson is built around real ideas, real arguments, and real situations — because the goal is not to produce correct sentences. It is to produce people who reach for English when they have something important to say.

Small groups, every session

Small groups are not a feature. They are the method. You cannot learn to speak by watching someone else speak. You need the floor. In our classes, you get it — every session, without waiting.

What comes after the certificate

We are not here for your certificate. We are here for what comes after it. The test score, the job, the university, the country — that is what we are actually preparing you for.
